Why Hierarchy is Important to Your Design

Layout Design Part 3: 3 Reasons Hierarchy is Important to Your Design

Hierarchy. One of the 5 principles of layout design.

By definition, this principle refers to the arrangement of elements in order of importance.

Effective layouts have a clear hierarchy, guiding viewers' eyes and prioritizing information

The most important elements should be given the most prominence, while less important elements should be minimized.

This can be done in a variety of ways with design.
It could be the font, colors, graphics, shapes, etc.

So why is hierarchy important to your print or website design?

Effective hierarchy in design gives:

  1. Clarity and Efficiency: A strong hierarchy helps your audience understand the most important information first, preventing them from getting lost in a sea of visual clutter.

If you’re marketing a new program with a brochure or flyer, you want to make sure your audience can clearly understand what message you want them to receive.

If you want your audience to buy something on your website, you want to make sure they know exactly what you’re selling and how to get there.

Think of it as a roadmap, leading them through your content logically and engagingly. Where do you want your customers to g

  2. Visual Interest: Hierarchy isn't just about function; it's also about aesthetics. By using elements like size, color, and contrast to create emphasis, you can add visual depth and intrigue to your layouts, making them more captivating to look at.

Not everyone is a designer, but that doesn’t mean people don’t appreciate when something looks nice. If something isn’t pleasing to look at or is hard to read, your audience won’t think twice about moving on.

  3. A Clear Call to Action: A well-defined hierarchy can subtly nudge users toward your desired action (without your customers even realizing it.) By highlighting key buttons or calls to action, you can make them more prominent and encourage engagement.

What is your end goal with your design? Are you getting someone to an event? To sign up for your newsletter? To purchase your new product? Whatever the desired outcome, effective hierarchy in your design will get your audience there.

It's important to find the right balance when using different elements of hierarchy.

Too much of a good thing can be overwhelming, so be sure to use it strategically and avoid cluttering your layouts.
