What is Typography?

Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed.

It involves the selection of typefaces, font sizes, line lengths, spacing, and other elements to create a visually appealing and effective communication.

Why is it important?

Typography is important because it can affect how people perceive your message. The right font can make your text more engaging and readable, while the wrong font can make it difficult to read or even turn people off altogether.

Here are some examples of good typography in action:

  • The bold headline on a magazine cover that grabs your attention.

    • When we’re waiting in the grocery store check-out line, or walking through the airport, what magazine or book will you grab based on what we see?

  • The easy-to-read text in a book that makes it a pleasure to read.

    • If we can’t read it – do we think our audience will be able to? People have a short attention span. If they’re not able to read it within 1-2 seconds, they will move on.

  • The clear and concise signage in a public space that helps you find your way around.

    • Whenever we’re in a new or unfamiliar place, we look for street signs or some signage telling us where to go, or how to order. If that’s not clear for us from the start, is that somewhere we’ll return? You want your customers to know exactly where they’re going and what they’re doing, to make sure they come back.

No matter what you're creating, typography is an important element to consider.

By following these tips, you can use typography to create designs that are both visually appealing and easy to read.
